Introduction

For individuals to perform better there are things that they ought to do.  According to Illand (2012, p.45), two of the fundamental things for good performance are self management and self development. These two aspects of performance are important for the purpose of ensuring that individual contribution towards the overall objective of an organization is capable of creating high level efficiency.

For better understanding of the above two aspects of an individual, the details of each one of them will be discussed in this essay. Additionally, this essay will focus on the concepts that surround each one of them. This essay will also try as much as possible to outline the theories that give more insight of self management and self development. A summary of all that surrounds self management and self development will be given in the conclusion section.

Self management

Self management refers to the taking up personal responsibility in all matters related to the behavior of an individual. In self management, it is the duty of a person to ensure that the decision to take a particular path in terms of action lies squarely on him or herself (Eicholz 2011, p.64). Self management stipulates that a person should be able to have self control when it comes to the way he or she handles personality related affairs.

For successful self management process, it is important to draw guidance from various aspects of an individual. Self management is more concerned with a person being able to understand more about oneself. It entails first being able to gather more self knowledge. With self knowledge identified, it is possible to have proper self management through inviting certain skills and aspects into the behavior of an individual.

One of the things that enhance self management is motivation. Motivation refers to the ability of a person to be able to develop interest in doing something (Nussbaum 2013, p.39). Therefore, with motivation an individual will always have a positive attention towards activities that he or she purposes to do.

Secondly, self management is usually supported positively by having self reflection. Self reflection refers to the process of looking deeply into the personality of an individual. Therefore, when a person is able to understand better about his or her personality and skills, it is always easy to have self management.

Self management is also supported by coming up with ambitious targets. Upon reflecting and knowing oneself better, an individual is supposed to set some bars that have to be hit (Merkle 2011, p. 21). These targets regarding self behavior should be set so that they offer a clear guidance towards achievement of full self management. Additionally, an individual should come up with a system for analysis and evaluation of the self management process. This is necessary for the purpose of ensuring that the process of self management does not spin out of control.

Self development

Self development refers to an individual activity where the aspects that define a person are improved consistently. Self development refers to a situation whereby an individual is able to improve on aspects of life such as the skills held, level of talent, the level of self awareness and knowledge. From self development, an individual is able to perform better each new day as a result of improving on the personal driving forces.

The importance of self development is emphasized by the fact that certain changes keep on occurring. The fact that the environment in which people operate in keep on changing calls for self development for the purpose of catching up. Additionally, work and employment situations of individuals keep on changing thus the need for individuals to embrace self development to ensure that there are no negative effects as a result of the dynamism.

An individual is supposed to ensure that the process of self development leads to positive results (Gall 2011, p. 245). This is necessary since it ensures that there is good progress that a person is experiencing. For positive effects to be experienced by a person, it is important to for a person to ensure that whatever needs to be improved is well defined. This means that the aspects that an individual wants to make better about him or herself need to be clear.

The importance of clear target for improvement lies in the fact that it is easy to make a clear self management plan and evaluate accordingly as the process continues (Reddy 2012, p.16). Additionally, for a successful self management process, it is extremely important for an individual to come up with a priority list of whatever is to be improved. The need for prioritizing what is to be improved is brought about by the fact that some aspects and skills are required first so that they may support the process of self management (Udo 2013, p. 18).

For example, the improvement of personal discipline is a priority for the purpose of supporting the improvement of others such as consistency. It is worth noting that the process of prioritizing in self development is made better through identifying what aspects or skills of an individual will be required in future. This means that efforts put on improvement should target aspects or skills of a person that will be useful in future.

Theories supporting self management and self development

There are several theories that have content supporting self development. Developmental humanistic approach theory argues that employees should be given power through being taken for training. According to Masters and Wallace (2013, p.32), this theory argues that when the employees are given an opportunity to learn, they get to improve on some of their skills thus benefiting an organization.

Additionally, when people employees are taken through developmental processes, they feel appreciated and in return create more output for an organization. The other theory that supports self development is the human capital theory. The human capital theory argues that it is beneficial to put more resources into human resource development in an organization.

Conclusion

It is worth noting that it is only personal responsibility which is capable of moving a person to a higher level of self management and development. The consistency of the positive aspects of these personal activities should be grown every day. Every person should ensure that the skills that improve the level of self management and development are internalized for better results.

For efficient processes of self management and self development, it is necessary to have a good system for carrying out evaluation (Davis 2014, p,89). These processes should be evaluated regularly to ensure that they are within the plan. Any negative deviations identified in the process of evaluation should be controlled to ensure that the relevance of self management and self development is not lost.

The strengths identified and improved should be utilized to ensure that the performance of an individual is at a high level. Furthermore, if any weaknesses are identified, it is important to ensure that they are managed well and transformed into strengths.

Are restaurants where you live required to provide visible calorie information under current regulations? Should restaurants provide calorie and nutrition information before they are required to do so by law? Do you think calorie information will change people’s health practices?

Under the current law, restaurants in my neighborhoods are required to provide clear calorie information. This is because the new regulations are applicable not only to restaurants but also casual dining entities. In addition, the regulations apply to non-conventional establishments including bakeries, convenience stores, malls, and groceries that specialize in selling food.

The current law also applies to goods sold in vending machines as such require clear calorie information. In fact, restaurants where I live are required to clearly and display nutrition details on their menus including drive-through areas and individual food items. While these restaurants are required to maintain a 2,000 calorie as a platform for health advice, each person calorie requirements may differ (Rosenbloom, 2010).

In restaurants, detailed calorie information should be made available to all patrons. They also have the right to access calorie information whenever they deem fit. Owing to the fact that US citizens consume approximately one third of calories daily from foods prepared in other places, restaurants should also provide nutritional as well as calorie information firsthand as requested by the law.

For that reason, making such information available on restaurants’ menus will enable people to choose health diets. Food and drug authority (FDA) final regulation on nutrition labeling in restaurants will change people health practices, since they will get consistent and clear nutritional details of food prepared away from home (FDA.gov, 2015).

Providing calorie on menus will fill important gap while assisting people to make suitable and healthy nutritional practices. Research demonstrates that people tend to consume less calories when information is provided on menus. With this, consumers stand to benefit from essential nutrition content hence making healthier food alternatives that may reverse the trend of increasing obesity in US.

Few businesses across the globe feel they are confident enough to quickly recover from a disaster. The ability of a firm to effectively recover from a disaster relies directly to the degree of an established business continuity plan before the occurrence of the disaster. 

Managers have acknowledged that developing a robust business continuity plan is at times quite intimidating especially when one turns to the bookshelves and find volumes of thick-inch books on the subject. However, I am against this notion. I believe that a solid business continuity strategy can be implemented easily by following these steps.

Step 1: Start

According to Torabi et al, acquiring an executive-level support for the business continuity program is one of the biggest challenges for getting the initiative off the ground (Torabi et al, 2014). Therefore, when developing this program, I will ensure that I have the support of the CEO or any other senior executive. By so doing, I will have put the strategy in a different light in the presence of functional leaders who might be tempted to dismiss it as just another IT program. The top level management will then provide the necessary resources required for the plan.

Step 2: Determine Business Requirements

I will then identify and document the critical business functions that would require support in the aftermath of a tragedy. This step deserves a rigorous analysis as it aims at allocating properly the resources of the business continuity plan. To acquire the correct information, I will business leaders in each department this simple question. To achieve this, I will use the administrative management theory.

This is a theory that states that the executives are charged with the mandate of ensuring that organizational operations are maintained. It also enlightens on the need for managers to develop a sense of unity and willingness to communicate and operate with the workforce. “In an event of a disaster, what systems in your business would you like to operate immediately to avoid disruption of your activities, and how long can you do without them?”

The answers I will obtain will be the Maximum Tolerable Downtime (MTD) for the operations. This question should be asked in a manner that is political savvy to ensure that the systems mentioned are critical and not convenient.

Step 3: Identify Recovery Speed

Järveläinen proved in his study that although 85% of small businesses recognize the need of recovering their data during a disaster, just 45% of them carry out offside data backups (Järveläinen, 2013). I will determine the recovery speed by asking technology specialists the following questions. “In case of a disruptive emergency, how long will your system take to restore to working order?” The value I will obtain will be my recovery time objective (RTO).

Step 4: Dealing with the Gaps

After including the RTOs to my list of MTDs, I will have the necessary data for conducting an assessment on the impact of an emergency on my technology operations. I will begin by revisiting the numbers. Before this, I will ensure that the MTDs I obtained from the business leaders are accurate and the technologists’ recovery times are indeed insufficient for achieving business needs.

I will then scrutinize keenly the list and identify areas where the RTO is greater than the MTD. These are the areas where functional leaders will have expressed the need for a recovery that the current organization will not be in a position to meet in the aftermath of a tragedy.

After the conversations, the gaps that will have remained will be candidates for investment. Here, I will use the decision-making theory which basically focuses on the significance of decision making and choosing alternatives that achieve the minimum success criteria rather than seeking for an optimal intervention.

For instance, I will recommend for the purchase of additional systems, and addition of fault tolerance systems. Moreover, I can suggest that commitments of time and money to be made in order to increase the MTD and minimize the RTO.

Step 5: Sustaining the Program

Business Continuity Strategies are living documents that keep evolving in accordance to the changes of the business and technological capabilities (Faertes, 2015). I will sensitize the management on the importance of this plan and why it needs to be reviewed from time to time. I can use the systems approach theory to determine institutional behavior as a function of input, system processes, and output. Then I will recommend modifications to be done with regards with the organization’s progress.

2. Importance of Business Continuity Plan

The significance of Business Continuity Plans is something that each and every company has been compelled to deal with due to the current events. For instance, there has been a current increase in business threats such as cyber-terrorists, hackers, and natural as well as unnatural disasters. It is for this reason that organizations have been urged to execute business continuity plans so that they can sustain flexibility and operational effectiveness in case of any scenario.

A survey by Faertes, revealed that two out of five organizations that experience an emergency go out of the business within the first five years of the tragedy (Faertes, 2015). As a result, most businesses have realized that for them to efficiently maintain operation continuity, they must be accustomed to specific risks and catastrophic scenarios ranging from system failure to major building loss. It is crucial for organizations to plan for the recovery of the significant business functions using timescales and priorities obtained from evaluated risks and the accompanying data.

Business Continuity Strategies are also vital since they promote transparency and continuity of all business activities. In recent years, companies have become increasingly reliant on technology to conduct their operations. With such emphasis on IT and communications services, organizations become paralyzed and less tolerant of information and loss of services in the event of a disaster. Therefore, for them to manage their supply chains or support communications and transactions with their customers, they need to implement business continuity plans.

With the rapid increase in the aging population, it is important for the advanced nurse to assess the factors that influence the placement appropriateness. My experiences in geriatric placement have made me learn that the patient’s transition from home into permanent nursing home can be traumatic, especially because such placement occurs often during distress and crisis (Desai & Grossberg, 2010).  For effective transitions, the patient must be prepared psychologically. Change is not rapid and it can be overwhelming if not properly planned.

 For instance, Mrs. B, 76 years old Puerto Rican female lived in New York City. Her neighbourhood was a low income neighbourhood, where she lived with her son George. She had a myriad of diseases including diabetes, asthma, hypertension and cancer.  On this particular day, it was noted that the patient was not compliant to medication. She had failed to honour the last six follow up clinic.

Upon the analysis of her environment, it was clear that the patient was not safe (Payne, Hahn & Mauer, 2013). The patient was placed at CDE home care settings as the patient need palliative care. This is one of the most challenging cases as it was my first assignment as an advanced practitioner.

The patient cognitive impairment had progressed significantly. The patient health status and financial instability are some of the factors that hindered effective transition from one healthcare setting to another.  The situation was stressful as the patient thought of leaving all they have known was unbearable. This made the patient to be vulnerable as she felt like she had lost her identity and independence (Phillips & Guo, 2011).

She became so depressed that within the first month she had Alzheimer disease mild symptoms. Few weeks later, she fell into a comma. Fortunately, during one of her clinics she had filled an advance directive that stated that she did not favour mechanisms of having her life prolonged. She passed on one day later.  I believe the poor planning of her transition was so traumatizing for her health to embrace the change.

From this experience, I have learnt to develop tailor made strategies to help the patient and their family members when dealing with healthcare setting transition.  The general matters such as finance issues are discussed before transition to ensure that the patient understands their responsibilities as well as the sources the patients are eligible.  Secondly, I have learnt that it is important to have an open communication.  This enhances trust and relationship that makes the client feel secure about their decisions (Bauer & Nay, 2011).

In this case, Miriam Regalado files a sex discrimination charge against North American Stainless (NAS). Her fiancé Eric Thompson is later fired and proceeds to file a charge against NAS for alleged third party retaliation. He claims that he was fired in retaliation because his fiancée had filed a case against the company.

The U.S. District Court and the U.S Court of Appeal rule that Thompson is not protected by Title VII as third party claims are not permitted. The U.S. Supreme Court however rules in his favor, stating that Thompson is protected under Title VII and that employers should not perform actions aimed at dissuading a worker from filing or supporting a discrimination charge.

Retaliation claims are allowed under Title VII in a bid to protect employees from unlawful termination, based on an action that is protected by federal law. This also includes third party retaliation which encompasses protection of a close friend, colleague, relative, partner or other relation from termination for being associated with the person in question.

The law recognizes that an employer may terminate an individual related to the affected person as a form of ‘punishment’ and in a bid to dissuade them from making a claim or supporting discrimination charge and thus seeks to protect such individuals. The absence of such a law would make employees susceptible to unlawful termination for being involved in activities that are protected under the law such as filing for discrimination or supporting violation of such endeavors. Employee relations would also be at risk of termination without any fault. (Nacua, 2006).

North American Stainless was unethical in its decision to fire Thompson and he should not have been fired just because Regalado was his fiancé. The case however does not clearly state the reason for Thompson’s dismissal, leading to a question of whether he may have been fired for a different reason other than retaliation.

This case sets precedence for increased possibility of employers being sued for retaliation following firing other relations such as girlfriends, boyfriends, co-workers, relatives and friends. The decision by the Supreme Court makes it clear that an individual can file a retaliation claim if he is fired due to activities, protected under the law, that a person they are related to is involved in.

On the other hand, the possibility of being sued may decrease because employers are now more aware of the risk of retaliation based on this case. It therefore means that they would be more cautious when dismissing staff.
