Scenario 1—Bankruptcy

Katrina, a risk manager for State Farm Insurance, filed a petition in bankruptcy under Chapter 7, seeking to discharge $55,000 in credit-card debts and $35,000 in student loans. Katrina’s husband died and left her with two children, Paula, who attended college, and Dean, who was fifteen years old. According to Katrina, Dean was an “elite” runner who practiced ten to fifteen hours a week and placed first or second at more than forty competitive events.

Dean was homeschooled with academic achievements that were average for his grade level. Katrina’s petition showed monthly income of $5,400 and expenses of $5,100. The expenses included annual homeschool costs of $6,200 and annual running expenses of $7,500. The expenses did not include college costs for Paula, or airfare for her upcoming summer trip to Italy, and other items. The trustee allowed monthly expenses of $4,400, with nothing allocated for running expense and asked the court to dismiss the petition.

Scenario II – Insurance

Juanita owns a home in Birmingham, Alabama. Her elderly grandmother lives in the house so Juanita can help take care of her. Juanita decides to purchase a fire insurance policy from Allstate to cover the house and a life insurance policy from Liberty Mutual to cover funeral and other expenses that will be incurred when her grandmother dies. Six months later, Juanita sells the house to Ben.

Juanita and her grandmother move into a rental home. One month prior to the expiration of the fire insurance, Juanita’s old house burns to the ground. Shortly after, her grandmother dies. The insurance companies state that they are not liable because Juanita did not have an insurable interest in the home or her grandmother. The premiums were returned to Juanita.

In this assignment, you will be asked to consider the role of organizational leaders with respect to ensuring companies work to create an ethical workplace culture. It is important for all upper-level leaders to ‘walk the talk’ so to speak. In addition, many larger companies have a Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer who provides leadership and oversight to the company’s business ethics related endeavors.

Recall that Lockheed Martin has such an executive level position. However, not all companies have such a position. In this module, we’ll be looking at the efforts that go into a corporate ethics program and some of the difficulties faced by companies trying to implement such programs. Your readings from Terris’ book will look at some of the steps that Lockheed had to go through in the continued development and implementation of their ethics program. Terris states:Chapter 3 gives a detailed account of the various aspects of Lockheed Martin’s ethics program.

I treat the company’s code of ethics, the role of its corps of ethics officers, the nature of internal ethics investigations, efforts to “sell” ethics to the employee community, and innovative programs like the corporation’s annual “Ethics Film Festival.” I also describe how Lockheed Martin measures its own success in the ethics area, through a biennial survey, and the struggles of the ethics program to maintain credibility within a bottom-line environment. This chapter focuses on the strengths of Lockheed Martin’s ethics program, within the corporation’s own definition of the program’s mission (Terris, 2005. p. 48.)

Summary of interview findings

Ethical Leadership

Moral leadership is a procedure whereby a person influences other peoples to realize a common objective. Individuals can become leaders in various ways including trait leadership, great event and process leadership theories.  On trait theory, is a scenario where particular personality traits can lead individuals naturally into leadership. Great event theory involves a crisis or significant case that causes a person to rise and take up the leading role while leadership process theory involves learning leadership skills.

Ethical Leadership and Job Performance

Workers are valuable organizational assets, such that without them, corporate vision cannot be realized. Ethical leadership takes the center stage when it comes to mediating between organizational culture and worker outcomes. In any case, moral leadership can contribute to the efficiency of a leader, workers willingness to work extra hard, workforce job contentment and an environment for ethical leadership to succeed that eventually result in enhanced employee performance.

Personal action

The development of ethical leadership in an organization is a lengthy procedure, and ethical strategies are developed to prepare the staff with fundamentals for efficient management. Personally we focus on training our employees.  Ethics in an organization applies to all employees irrespective of their position. Thus, we have implemented a mechanism for ensuring that all personnel helps in the sustainable survival of the operations.

The action is centered on developing workers with ethical competence, role models and empowering others to ensure organizational goals are achieved. Nonetheless, training programs must concentrate on personal reflection directed by concepts that improve the relevance of ethical values as well as management insights.

Effects of personal actions on employees and colleagues

Individual actions have been an eye opener from senior executives to formulate shared dialogue and conception concerning the way in which ethical leadership can be executed. Much as my interview believes that people can become leaders through trait leadership, great event and process leadership theories, I think leadership can be transformational or transactional. Transformational leadership employs strategies and approaches to empower others, increase their self-reliance and change their practices, attitudes that are consistent with the leader’s objectives. Additional transformation leaders use inspirational stimulation, individualized reflection, idealized authority and psychological motivation to meet organizational goals efficiently.

I support my interviewee’s views regarding ethical leadership and employee performance. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that moral leadership is linked to positive impacts on the performance of workers, motivation, and their readiness to report issues. Moreover, moral leaders are likely to influence “task importance” and “independence” of employee readiness to work hard to ensure objective is realized.

If workers perceive senior executive’s good morals, ethics can be seen as a crucial aspect of the organization. This can be converted into appreciating of senior executives by workers. While information from the interview show that ethical leadership is responsible for mediating between organizational culture and worker outcomes, trust and commitment are important parameters for increasing workers performance (Piccolo et al., 2010).

Much as training is an important strategy for ensuring that employees prioritize ethics/ethical behavior; it is necessary to recognize the importance of ethical leadership; ways in which the company benefits its shareholders and values. It is also essential to invest time in raising concerns regarding the impacts of ethical behavior on primary shareholders, or the organization’s values as well as morals. Like the interview findings, the organization has actions for developing ethical behaviors among employees. However, these measures should be reinforced by integrating ethical leadership. It’s not essential to utilize specific principles, although the organization can involve employees in a manner that it considers moral.

The effects of personal actions have provided new insights into management; it’s of great importance to recognize that familiarity of both leadership and ethics presents a theoretical structure for comprehending the practice of ethics particularly when leading. Furthermore, they offer opportunities for exercising leadership responsibilities in cases that call for shared action whereby the learner has certain duties for results that are important to others.

In any case, it’s essential to reinforce personal ethics that integrates fundamental values like loyalty and integrity. The developed of actions that prioritize ethical behavior the codes should be clear and implementation of appropriate guidelines to make sure that employees recognize their roles and expectations. Additionally, an organization should exhibit moral leadership during selection and recruitment procedure; training while giving incentives to workers that embrace ethical behaviors.

Based on research outcomes, I agree that communication style can increase organizational performance. On the other hand leader’s communication style can adversely affect the organization’s operations. This is because effective communication is largely reliant on leadership qualities, which enable open communication between workers and management. Nevertheless, effective communication style that fosters worker output is challenging (Pirraglia 2012). Communication style of the organization is affected by leadership approach.

By and large, ethical issue is an overall concept; especially in organizations as such leaders should take necessary measures. Ethical managers are considered as people with a wide ethical understanding and concern for stakeholders. For that reason, they should create ethically conducive workplace for workers, convey ethical aspects, act as role models and implement strategies for developing qualified workers.

Leaders that demonstrate ethical behavior put into consideration not only the needs but also workers rights and fair treatment.  Without a doubt, each worker prefers working with a truly and responsible organization. Therefore, senior managers have to meet ethical issue commitments.

By the ethical issues surrounding the medical procedure of embryo harvesting and freezing. An interview was conducted. The interviewee was a friend, her name Tina. During the interview, I asked some relevant questions about the topic at hand. In return, the interview did her utmost best to answer the questions accordingly regarding her world view or philosophical perspective. Below is the summary of the interview integrating the interviewee’s personal philosophy in relations to the answer she provided.

The central theme of the interview was, “is embryo harvesting and other related or similar procedures that induce artificial procreation ethical?”  The opening question for the interview was merely similar to the theme. Tina answered that there is no moral ground for creating human beings artificially, which is far away from the natural order of life. It was evident that the interviewee did not hold true the statements to support the given medical procedures.

She said while answering the second question that these statements were just a mere excuse to justify the medical license and legality given to these acts that surpass the laws of nature. In no time or place will it ever be correct to harvest a deceased person’s semen or ova to continue with the siring of an offspring outside the natural order of doing things (Williams, 2011).

The interview provided significant information that gave quite some insight into Tina’s philosophy about the world. Essentially, it is prudent to conclude that Tina believed that there is a given order in life that has kept the world sustainable as it is. The sustainability in the sense that nature works in conjunction with the balance of life. Every day people die. Others without heirs to their names. If most people in the world took to embryo harvesting and freezing.

Then the balance of nature will have been disrupted and the control of the world’s population. Thus, sooner or later planet earth would not be able to support the increasing population that is not under the balance of nature. Hence, the natural order or balance of life would be disrupted while doom keeps pending. The conclusion is that there are no moral grounds that justify such medical procedures. There is just that point or border that cannot be crossed when it comes to nature.

This is unethical. However, when the codes of ethics are properly exercised, a culture is cultivated whereby the bearer of bad news is not punished.

Confidentiality of Information

It is necessary for the confidentiality of privacy of the customers to be honored and maintained. Same treatment should be accorded on the clients’ identities, the assignments undertaken and any other information that may be acquired through the course of a professional relationship. However, there is an exception to this only when a customer grants permission. Ethics also emphasize that an organization should protect and respect other people’s intellectual property rights. Most employees have a preference of working for ethical organizations. The status of ethical business practices attracts job applicants that are better qualified and well motivated. It also promotes public relations and the moral standards of the workers.

Customers may let an organization take advantage of them once. However, they can realize that they were not treated in a fair manner just as they expected. For instance, they can be convinced to buy substandard goods or be overcharged. As a result, they cease being repeat customers of the organization. Corey et al enlightens that having a client base that is loyal is one of the most essential keys that promote long term success in business (Corey et al, 2014).

This is due to the fact that attending to a pre-existing customer does not entail marketing costs compared to getting a new customer. Therefore, an institution that maintains desirable ethical behavior succeeds in creating a more positive image in the market place. This attracts new clients. On the other hand, unethical behavior hinders the company’s opportunities to acquire new clients especially in this era of social networking whereby customers that are dissatisfied can easily spread information regarding the negative experiences they have been exposed to.

Retain good employees

Competent and hardworking workers at all company levels expect to be rewarded and compensated appropriately for their determination (Shapiro and Stefkovich, 2016). They expect project managers to advance their careers within the company not on favoritism but on the basis of what they have delivered and achieved in the company. PMI requires that the management team should tell its workers the truth about what the company is doing, such as cases of reorganization and layoffs.

When companies adhere to PMI’s code of ethics, they become open and fair in their dealings and hence have a higher probability of maintaining the most competent workers. Workers stop being dedicated to their jobs the moment they find out that the company’s compensation methodology is not fair as they expect.   

Positive Working Environment

Employees, from the moment they have their first job interview, are expected to behave in an ethical manner. They are required to be frank with their previous experience and capabilities. Employees who exercise ethical behavior are not considered to be individuals just out on themselves but team players who have the interest of the company at heart. Such individuals will not stop at anything until they make sure that the objectives of the project they are undertaking have been met.

To do this, they develop positive relationships with their coworkers. The project managers trust such workers with information deemed to be confidential and as a result they end up being given more autonomy. Contrary, workers that are unethical and are caught in the lies by the project managers cut short their chances of advancement within the company. In most cases, they end up being fired.
