How could nurses within the organizations you chose in the group project impact health policy?

Janet Hagberg, in her book ‘Real Power: Stages of Personal Power in Organizations’, describes six stages through which people go when developing their power within a company.

1. Powerlessness

We start from a position of powerlessness. When we join an organization we know nobody and are totally dependent on others for initial assistance in understanding how things work, how to influence others and how to get things done.

2. Power by association

Power by association is the power we gain by being able to utilize the power that others already have.

As we get to know people and gain their respect and trust, we may leverage their power, for example in asking them to ask others to do things or asking them for introductions. The secret of gaining associative power is hence in being able to create bonds and draw on relationships.

We can also join teams, clubs and form other associations and coalitions, thereby gaining the power of the group.

3. Power by achievement

Power by acquisition is that power which we gain through what we do and the persuasive evidence that others perceive in this.

Achievement leads to achievement. If we do well at work then we are given more important work and may also get promoted. The power we get from this multiplies, as people cede power to those who prove their ability, which then allows them to achieve further still.

4. Power by reflection

In a curious reversal of depending on others for power, we can gain power through internal reflection and realizing we have all personal power on which we can draw.

A person at this stage is competent and has sound integrity. They are widely respected and this strength draws others to them, on whose ability and power they may consequently depend. Paradoxically, as they let go of their ego, they gain more power.

5. Power by purpose

People at this stage are driven by their purpose. Their power comes from within. Their inner power is so much greater than the power of those around them, they can influence decisions of many others.

Great leaders show this purpose in stirring speeches and powerful and symbolic action. They succeed because they believe in a greater purpose beyond themselves. They are visionary and self-accepting, humble and spiritual.

6. Power by wisdom

Stage six people feel a deep connection to the greater universe. They may often spend time in solitude, connecting and reflecting. They may have been through great pain and crisis on more than one occasion, yet have used these events to learn and grow.

They have found contentment and live on an ‘even keel’. The purpose they work to is very high. The know and accept powerlessness and in doing so find ultimate power. They embrace paradox and do not need to take sides.

The city of New Orleans and other coastal communities in Katrina’s path remain significantly altered more than a decade after the storm, both physically and culturally. The damage was so extensive that some pundits had argued, controversially, that New Orleans should be permanently abandoned, even as the city vowed to rebuild.

The population of New Orleans fell by more than half in the year after Katrina, according to Data Center Research. As of this writing, the population had grown back to nearly 80 percent of where it was before the hurricane.

Katrina first formed as a tropical depression in Caribbean waters near the Bahamas on August 23, 2005. It officially reached hurricane status two days later, when it passed over southeastern Miami as a Category 1 storm. The tempest blew through Miami at 80 miles per hour, where it uprooted trees and killed two people. Katrina then weakened to a tropical storm, since hurricanes require warm ocean water to sustain speed and strength and begin to weaken over land. However, the storm then crossed back into the Gulf of Mexico, where it quickly regained strength and hurricane status. (Read a detailed timeline of how the storm developed.)

In Coleman’s article Abortion and mental health: quantitative synthesis and analysis of research published 1995-2009 (2011), the writer of the article intended to carry out a quantitative synthesis which would be vital in providing a clear illustration to clinicians about the connection between abortion and mental well-being. The author sought to use the quantitative method to determine the extent of the connection between abortion and the various pointers of adversarial mental health. The fact that the researcher used sample populations is a clear indication that the quantitative method was used for this research.

Research method

The sample used for the research included 22 studies, 36 measurements of effects and 877, 181 participants. One of the aspects that emerge is that the author made sure that there was the utilization of multiple studies which were relevant and met specific criteria. The writer indicated that studies were acknowledged using the Medline and PsycInfo databases.

Moreover, the studies were to have a sample size of 100 participants or more, utilized a comparison cluster, had one or multiple mental health outcome variables and used odds ratios to demonstrate effects noticed to facilitate calculation of readily translatable assembled odds ratios and PAR statistics. As seen, the primary population that was focused on was pregnant women those who wished to have an abortion and those who did not. However, the author does not indicate whether there was the legitimacy of other sources written by researchers who had conducted researches focused on the connection between mental health and abortion.

Through the statistical analysis, it can be derived that the writer had there was a specific formula that was used to come up with the most accurate results possible. Looking at the ethical issues, it is evident that there were no moral or ethical issues that were documented. This can be said to be fueled by the fact that the author used previous researches conducted and as such, there was no need to include names of participants but rather just required the use of overall statistics obtained. Therefore, the rights of participants were well protected.

Limitations

Coleman was quite thorough in the research and was able to identify some limitations of the research. One of the constraints documented by the researcher is that the review was not comprehensive since only a 15-year publication window was scrutinized. Also, there was no analysis of comparison groups.

The other limitation stipulated is that the study is that there was a deprivation of consistency in control variables, demographic features of the samples, the duration between processes and follows up valuations, and notable difference in how results were measured.

Analysis

After careful examination of the article, several aspects emerge. One of them is that the author was quite systematic in the provision of quantitative data. This is one of the compelling aspects of the article. Coleman is quite methodical in presenting data using graphs and tables. This goes a long way in illustrating to the reader that whatever is stipulated in the article has been carefully examined and is well detailed.

Through these tables and diagrams, one is also able to see the various sources used by the author. The author is also quite accurate and ensures that those who get a chance to go through the article know the formula that was used for the research.  Furthermore, the fact that the author used 22 studies by other researchers is an indication that Coleman wanted to be accurate in conclusions. One of the weaknesses of the article is that the author does not give an individual analysis of the sources that were used.
