Contemporary Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy, also referred to as psychoanalytic therapy, is rooted in Dr. Sigmund Freud’s proposal that unconscious thought processes, or thoughts and feelings outside of our conscious awareness, are responsible for mental health issues. This therapeutic approach is unique because its goal is to help clients achieve changes in personality and emotional development. Like most therapeutic approaches, however, psychodynamic psychotherapy is not appropriate for every client. In your role as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, you must be able to properly assess clients to determine whether this therapeutic approach would improve their clinical outcomes.

This week, as you explore psychodynamic psychotherapy, you examine the application of current literature to clinical practice. You also assess clients presenting for psychotherapy.

Janet Hagberg, in her book ‘Real Power: Stages of Personal Power in Organizations’, describes six stages through which people go when developing their power within a company.

1. Powerlessness

We start from a position of powerlessness. When we join an organization we know nobody and are totally dependent on others for initial assistance in understanding how things work, how to influence others and how to get things done.

2. Power by association

Power by association is the power we gain by being able to utilize the power that others already have.

As we get to know people and gain their respect and trust, we may leverage their power, for example in asking them to ask others to do things or asking them for introductions. The secret of gaining associative power is hence in being able to create bonds and draw on relationships.

We can also join teams, clubs and form other associations and coalitions, thereby gaining the power of the group.

3. Power by achievement

Power by acquisition is that power which we gain through what we do and the persuasive evidence that others perceive in this.

Achievement leads to achievement. If we do well at work then we are given more important work and may also get promoted. The power we get from this multiplies, as people cede power to those who prove their ability, which then allows them to achieve further still.

4. Power by reflection

In a curious reversal of depending on others for power, we can gain power through internal reflection and realizing we have all personal power on which we can draw.

A person at this stage is competent and has sound integrity. They are widely respected and this strength draws others to them, on whose ability and power they may consequently depend. Paradoxically, as they let go of their ego, they gain more power.

5. Power by purpose

People at this stage are driven by their purpose. Their power comes from within. Their inner power is so much greater than the power of those around them, they can influence decisions of many others.

Great leaders show this purpose in stirring speeches and powerful and symbolic action. They succeed because they believe in a greater purpose beyond themselves. They are visionary and self-accepting, humble and spiritual.

6. Power by wisdom

Stage six people feel a deep connection to the greater universe. They may often spend time in solitude, connecting and reflecting. They may have been through great pain and crisis on more than one occasion, yet have used these events to learn and grow.

They have found contentment and live on an ‘even keel’. The purpose they work to is very high. The know and accept powerlessness and in doing so find ultimate power. They embrace paradox and do not need to take sides.

MY DISCUSSION POST WAS BASED ON THE QUESTIONS THE PROFESSOR ASKED TO BE ANSWERED BELOW.

1) In the first paragraph write your first reaction to the two videos (I am not requesting for a summary of the videos but your own personal reaction.)

2) In the second paragraph answer the following questions. How does acquiring a theory of mind impact a child’s social interactions? According to this video, does acquiring a theory of mind occur at the same age across cultures? Can you think of any interactions that may help or hinder a child developing a theory of mind?

3) In the third paragraph answer the following questions. What would be the consequences by testing children from developing countries with procedures designed for children in developed countries? Would this affect the assessment? If so why? How would you design a more culturally-sensitive study?

MY RESPONSE :My reaction is amazement. It’s quite extraordinary that the three year old’s think that everyone sees the world see’s the same way, including snoopy. It’s funny that a 4 and 5 year old can already is able to see things differently. I’m shocked that in one year a child’s mind can cast a sense of doubt. I loved how the 5 year old kids are wanting to go along with the researchers assistant and trick her.

The theory of mind impacts a child’s socialization’s in multiple ways. Our ability to explain and predict other people’s behavior enables us to deceive and cooperate and empathize with people too. Unfortunately based off the video’s acquiring theory of mind, children don’t acquire at the same age across cultures.

I could imagine that children who grow up in an area where there is a lot of children at varying ages would help a child develop theory of mind. 
The consequences for trying to test children from a developing countries with testing and procedures that were designed to for children in developed countries wouldn’t be accurate or fair for evaluation.

This would unfairly effect the results and would thus be inaccurate. That is like comparing a 3 year to a 5 year old on the development of theory of mind as shown in the video. One would need to design a study based off of the how the children are developing in that particular country.

For example, in a developed country, you may be able to compare a 3yr old to a 5 year old theory of mind. In a developing country, you would test a 4 year old that would not have acquired the theory of mind. Furthermore, you could then compare the 4 year old to the 6 year old. Additionally, I would use objects that are culturally relevant to test the theory of mind.

On the other hand, clinicians require good leaders to help them in decision making related to assessment, planning treatment, good communication and proper practice. Both Psychopathology and Pathophysiology are relevant to psychology. As such, they can be used to show the level of understanding and skills one should possess so as to facilitate efficient organization leadership.

Explain psychopathology and pathophysiology

Psychopathology involves the study of mental disorder and commonly used in describing mental ailments (College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia, 2008).   On the other hand, Psychopathology can be called psychological illness. Assessing mental disorders based on the psychology or dysfunctional character provides delusional views. It encompasses the inability to effectively function, behaving normal or act by the set standards.

Dysfunction hinders individuals the ability to control their sentiments or even characters. For instance, being hysterically sad can lead to dysfunctional traits. Psychological ailments also entail dysfunctions that are used to demonstrate painful impairment, which hinders people ability to work normally.

With regards to Pathophysiology, it is an uncharacteristic disordered physiological process associated with an ailment or damage. The pathophysiology involves assessing the progress of the illness in the body, which make the patient look for various treatment approaches.

The medical manager should ensure the entire team recognizes their obligation and approach work-related tasks to the best of their abilities, towards enhancing the smooth running of the establishment. The leadership should engage its employees in establishing a working culture that is ethically sound in a healthcare environment (Ellis & Hartley, 2005). Moreover, these analytical models will help with upholding strong work standards within the organization.
